Computerized Axial Tomography – 64 Slice (CT Scan)

Our centre is equipped with Siemens high speed 64 slice multi – detector CT scanner which provides images in seconds using low dose x-rays taken, sequenced by a rotating X-ray tube. Radiologist and physicians can more effectively detect a wide range of life-threatening diseases and conditions, enabling them to make critical and accurate diagnosis for effective treatment.

The following CT examinations are available:

a. CT head, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, spine and extremities.
b. Coronary Calcium score.
c. CT Angiogram – Carotids and brain, coronary arteries, abdomen/renal and extremities.
d. CT Urography (CTU)
e. HRCT (high resolution CT of thorax and temporal bones/IAM)

Preparation for CT scanning may include food restriction 1 – 2 hours prior to the examination.

You might be given oral or rectal contrast prior to the examination. A contrast media may be administered in some cases and you may feel flushed for a moment during infusion.

Since the contrast contains iodine it may cause an allergic reaction in some people, you should inform your physician regarding any form of existing allergies prior to the examination.

If you are on any prescribed medication, please continue your medications as directed by your physician.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound scanning is a non – invasive technique that uses high frequency sound waves to produce images of internal organs and structures in the body. Therefore the Radiologist can make early and accurate detection of diseases via ultrasound scanning. There is no X-ray or ionizing radiation involved hence it is a safe and efficient imaging modality.

The following ultrasound examinations are available at our department:

a. General Ultrasound – abdomen and pelvis for adult and children
b. Small parts – breast, thyroid, breast, testis/scrotum and prostate
c. Obstetrics Ultrasound
d. Echocardiography and Doppler studies
e. Vascular – Carotids, Veins of lower limb

Ultrasound Preparation –

For abdomen ultrasound, food restriction is necessary 4 – 6 hours prior to the examination but you can consume plain water and you are allowed to continue with your prescribed medications. As for pelvic ultrasound, you need to drink at least 2 large glasses of water 1 hour prior to the examination. Please refrain from emptying your bladder until the examination is complete.

Bone Mineral Density Testing (BMD) – DEXA Scan

Bone mineral density measures the amount of calcium in the bones. The examination is fast, non-invasive and painless.

DEXA bone density testing is the most accurate method available for the diagnosis of osteoporosis and an accurate estimator of fracture risk.

Preparation for DEXA Scan
You should not take calcium supplements for at least 24 hours before your BMD examination. Please inform your doctor if you recently had a barium examination or have been injected with a contrast material for a computed tomography (CT) scan or radioisotope scan.

You may have to wait 10 – 14 days before undergoing a DEXA examination.
